    The Challenge

    Where Bulk Buys started

Bulk Buys is a WooCommerce wholesaler, and wholesale is a thin-margin business by definition. When margins are thin, paid acquisition is not just an expense — it is the single largest threat to profitability, because every dollar of media spend comes out of a very small gap between cost and price.

The site was leaning on paid channels to generate demand. That works, right up until the point where the cost of buying each order eats the margin on the order. Scaling a wholesale business on paid media alone means running faster to stay still.

Large WooCommerce catalogues also bring their own technical baggage: crawl inefficiency, thin or duplicated category pages, and product templates that were never built with organic search in mind.

    The Approach

    What we did

    01

    Fix the technical foundation first

Technical SEO across a large WooCommerce catalogue — crawlability, indexation control, site architecture and page templates — so the content work that followed had something solid to build on.

    02

Build category and product pages that can rank

Category and product pages were treated as the commercial landing pages they are, targeting the buying language of wholesale customers rather than generic retail terms.

    03

Chase breadth, not a handful of head terms

Wholesale demand is spread across a very wide set of specific product queries. The programme went after that breadth, which is what produced more than 500 page-one keywords rather than a few showcase rankings.

    04

Let organic replace paid demand deliberately

As organic coverage grew across the terms paid had been buying, paid spend was reduced against it — a planned handover rather than an abrupt switch-off.

    The Results

    What changed

    • Organic traffic up 887% in 18 months.
    • More than 500 keywords ranking on page one.
    • Seven figures in organic-attributed revenue.
    • Paid spend reduced while results held, because organic had replaced the demand paid was buying.

    SEO as the margin-saver

For a thin-margin wholesaler, the strategic value of organic search is not the traffic. It is the cost structure. Paid media charges for the same customer every single time. Organic rankings, once earned and maintained, keep delivering that customer without a per-order fee attached.

That difference is close to irrelevant for a business with fat margins and decisive for one without. Cutting paid spend while holding results is worth more to Bulk Buys than an equivalent increase in revenue would be, because the saving falls almost entirely to the bottom line.

The marketing team ran this engagement from the client side and made that trade-off explicitly. Organic was not added on top of paid as an extra channel — it was built to take work off paid, and the budget followed the results.

Why 500+ page-one keywords matters more than a handful of rankings

Wholesale buyers search with unusual specificity: exact products, quantities, pack sizes and specifications. There is no small set of head terms that captures most of that demand, which means a strategy built around a dozen showcase keywords will leave the overwhelming majority of the market untouched.

Building coverage across more than 500 page-one keywords is what turned organic into a channel large enough to replace paid demand. It is also far more durable — a broad footprint doesn't collapse when a single competitive term moves against you.

The revenue attributed to that organic footprint reached seven figures. As a share of what the business would otherwise have paid to acquire the same demand, that is the real number worth looking at.

What a large WooCommerce catalogue demands technically

Big WooCommerce stores accumulate technical debt almost automatically. Filters and sort parameters generate near-infinite URL variations, category pages get thin as products move, and product templates written for humans alone give search engines very little to work with.

None of that is visible from the front end, and none of it can be fixed with content. It has to be fixed at the level of crawl control, indexation and site architecture first, because publishing more pages onto a structure that cannot be crawled efficiently simply adds to the problem.

Getting that foundation right is what made the later gains possible. Once crawl budget was going to the pages that matter and the category structure reflected how buyers actually shop, the same content work started producing rankings it had no chance of producing before.

    Questions about this engagement

How long did the organic growth take?

Organic traffic grew 887% over 18 months, within an engagement running under two years.

Did paid advertising continue alongside SEO?

Paid spend was reduced as organic coverage grew, because organic had replaced the demand paid media was buying — an important saving for a thin-margin wholesale business.

What platform is the store on?
